This extension helps GIS developers to migrate ESRI ArcView projects to the most popular Free and Open Source alternatives for Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

What is?

Gix Export is an ArcView 3.x extension that allows export Views to the following formats:

Gix can export vector themes to these formats:

Features

  • Auto-creation of .map, .fnt (fonts) and .sym (Symbols) files for mapserver
  • Auto-creation of JPG file for reference map of MapServer
  • Auto-creation of .aep files (ArcExplorer), .axl files (ArcExplorer Java), .jcs files (JUMP)
  • Export themes as JUMP GML
  • Export themes as SQL ready to upload to PostgreSQL spatially enabled databases (using PostGis)
  • Export colors, symbol definitions as you see in ArcView (*see format notes for exceptions)
  • Retain view extension, themes order, layer names

Format Notes & ToDo List

MapServer

  • MapServer does not support more than three symbols overlayed per class. Beyond this limit, symbols will be commented out.
  • Incorrect EXPRESSION display with numeric values
  • Avoid joined themes
  • TODO: Raster Layer processing
  • TODO: Enclose fieldnames in single quotes in FILTER sentences

ArcExplorer

  • ArcExplorer does not support more than one symbol overlayed per class. Beyond this limit, symbols will be dropped.
  • Avoid joined themes
  • TODO: ArcSDE themes
  • Incorrect EXPRESSION display with numeric values

ArcExplorer Java

  • ArcExplorer Java does not support more than one symbol overlayed per class. Beyond this limit, symbols will be dropped.
  • Avoid joined themes

  • Incorrect EXPRESSION display with numeric values

JUMP

  • JUMP does not support more than one symbol overlayed per class. Beyond this limit, symbols will be dropped.
  • Avoid joined themes

  • Avoid joined themes

Using the extension

  1. Download and install the extension
  2. Open your target project in ArcView
  3. Load the extension
  4. Open the view wich you will export
  5. Select menu "View" -> "Export View" or "Theme" -> "Export Themes"
  6. A dialog will opens up; follow the provided instructions
